Clinical anesthesiology began at Mass General in 1846 with the first public demonstration of the use of ether for surgery. Since that time, we have been at the forefront of outstanding patient care as a leading center of anesthesia training. Residents in our department benefit from a broad breadth of faculty experience in clinical care, education, quality management and in clinical, translational and basic research. Our resident teaching program mentors trainees in a supportive environment, starting with total supervision and culminating in a mastery of all aspects of anesthesiology.
The department’s research activities are driven by an outstanding faculty of independent thinkers and cover a wide range of activities, including cutting-edge investigation in critical care medicine, neurosciences, biomedical engineering, patient safety and simulation.
