Massachusetts General Hospital's Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care provides a range of anesthetic, perioperative and pain management services to patients of all ages.
The Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care offers world-class patient care, the finest education for medical students and residents, innovative research laboratories and an accomplished faculty. Each year, we provide coverage for more than 40,000 procedures in 51 operating rooms and 25 additional anesthetizing locations on the main hospital campus.
Clinical anesthesiology began at Mass General in 1846 with the first public demonstration of the use of ether for surgery. Since that time, we have been at the forefront of outstanding patient care as a leading center of anesthesia training. Residents in our department benefit from a broad breadth of faculty experience in clinical care, education, quality management and in clinical, translational and basic research. Our resident teaching program mentors trainees in a supportive environment, starting with total supervision and culminating in a mastery of all aspects of anesthesiology.
